Maybe something feels stuck; in your life, your work, or yourself. Maybe you’re leading something and the weight of it is getting heavier. Maybe you’re building something and you need someone to think alongside you. Maybe you’re a practitioner who needs a space with someone that really gets the kind of work you do. Maybe you’re an organisation that knows something needs to change but isn’t sure where to start. Maybe you’re looking to bridge the gap between your values and your practice.

[ ROOTS WORK ]

The best community organisations already know what needs to change. They see it in their work, they hear it from the people they serve, and they feel it in their hearts. The challenge is rarely the vision, it’s the gap between what you know needs to happen and what you can actually make happen inside the constraints of funding, capacity, and systems that weren’t built for this work.

That gap, between intention and practice, is where I work.

Roots Work is project-based consultation for community, health, and voluntary sector organisations. It draws directly on five and a half years of collaboration, building and leading Partisan, and the body of practice and learning that emerged from that work; including the Four Pillars framework of Relationships, Redistribution, Regeneration,

and Repair, and a community psychology approach to systems change that centres the people most affected.

This is not consultancy in the conventional sense, I don’t arrive with a ready-made framework and impose it, I work with you; getting under the skin of your context, your community, and what change needs to look like in your specific setting. I bring honesty, challenge, and care in equal measure.

ROOTS WORK

My approach works across three levels:

Practice: what does culturally grounded, community-rooted work actually look like on the ground, with real people, in real spaces? How do practitioners show up, build trust, and hold complexity?

Infrastructure: do the internal conditions of the organisation support the work? Culture, governance, decision-making, power-sharing, and ways of working all shape what is possible in practice.

Policies in Practice: how do the values and commitments at the top of the organisation translate into what practitioners actually do? Where is the gap, and what does it take to close it?

Our work will be shaped around your specific context, needs and budget.A typical approach to the work might look like:

• A scoping phase: getting under the skin of the organisation, understanding the context, the challenges, and what change needs to look like

• Observation and reflection: spending time with teams, attending spaces, and feeding back what I notice

• Working across levels: from leadership to frontline, bringing the whole team into the thinking and the journey

• Iterative development: testing, learning, and adapting as we go, rather than arriving with a fixed answer

I like to bring the whole organisation into the process; making it interactive, generative, and owned by the people doing the work. Strategic work is often slow, but I move at pace where possible, whilst also honouring your rhythm, and moving at the speed of trust.

This work is often done in partnership with other consultants and organisations who share the same political and cultural commitments. I am selective about who I bring in, because the values in the room matter as much as the skills.

I work online and in person, and the shape of each piece of work is agreed at the outset based on what you need and what is realistic.
